A fortified citadel, located in the most central part of Bergamo Alta, served not only to defend against enemy attacks but also to visibly demonstrate the power of those who governed the city.

The Visconti family, who ruled the Duchy of Milan, ruled Bergamo from 1332 to 1428.

To guarantee effective defense to the most exposed parts within the walls, it was deemed necessary to build a further fortified structure within them.

An area was identified in the northern part of the Walls, between the gate of Sant'Alessandro to the south and that of San Lorenzo to the north which constituted the center of the military defensive apparatus.

The Fort of San Marco consisted of a large enclosed area created along the north-western sector of the fortified perimeter.
This area included six bastions out of a total of fourteen. It was also connected to the Castle of San Vigilio known as the Chapel by a covered road.

The Fort of San Marco was surrounded by a deep defensive moat, as already done around the fortified structure of the Venetian walls.

The center of Fort San Marco was made up of Piazza San Marco.

Here the soldiers and guards were concentrated in shelter and war material was stored in special warehouses.

The square was connected, via walkways and covered roads, to all the surrounding bastions, constituting the starting and finishing point of the tunnels that reached the gunboats and the sorties.

Furthermore, a secret exit was created, called "Porta del Soccorso" which led to the outside of the fortress.

This door, small and well camouflaged among the bush, also allowed the connection with the Castle of San Vigilio, known as the Chapel.
