The Elm forest in the municipality of Garlstedt and thus in the urban area of Osterholz-Scharmbeck is a mixed forest (Elm = old German for elm) in the north-west of the city center between the municipalities of Garlstedt and Huelseberg. A large number of burial mounds from the younger Bronze Age (approx. 1800 - 700 BC) can be found here and the Garlstedter Lure site was also found in the vicinity. Since 1995, the "Langes Holz" forest nature trail has been inviting visitors to take an informative walk in or on the Elm.After a pine monoculture had existed for decades, in 1987 a start was made on changing the stock of trees to mixed forest with a high proportion of hardwood. For 15 years, more than 100,000 beeches were planted in the Langen Holz and the Elm and 20 hectares of forest were protected over the years with over 20 game enclosures. In 2004 a deciduous wood content of approx. 35% was reached, the aim is around 65%.
