We mainly know about the Battle of Maldon (991 AD) due to a surviving fragment of Anglo-Saxon epic poetry. It tells how Ealdorman Byrhtnoth allowed a Viking army to cross the causeway from Northey Island, where they had landed, in order to engage them in pitched battle. The Saxons were defeated and had to buy the Vikings off with a danegeld, the first time such a payment was made.
