On February 23, 1945 at 11:49 a.m., the Main crossing was destroyed by the dropping of 132 aerial bombs. Three people died in this attack. Only the pillars and an arch remain of the bridge itself. The bridge was not rebuilt as a result. In the meantime, the Sommerhausen-Winterhausen Main ferry, a few meters north of the bridge, took over the transport across the river until 1970 when the new Sommerhausen-Winterhausen Main bridge was completed around 250 meters to the north.
