Kessel is an old Maas village with a rich history. In 1869 they found a Roman stone of the gods when they demolished an old church. This stone was dedicated to Minerva, Hercules and Juno. The remains of an old villa have also been excavated in Kessel-Eik. A late Roman iron helmet with a Christ monogram was even discovered in Kessel, which can now be seen in the Center Céramique in Maastricht. They also found a large copper kettle in Kessel, now in the Limburgs Museum in Venlo.

A historic market, monumental farmhouses and mansions, cozy terraces and a magnificent Maas panorama with the castle as an eye-catcher, the most modern castle in the Netherlands with a centuries-old history. This is Kessel, a place where time sometimes stands still.

The Villa Oeverberg Castle Museum is located on an atmospheric street with luxurious mansions on the Maas side. The magnificent house was built in 1870/1872 by the last noble resident of Burg de Keverberg, Baron Frits. This eccentric gentleman wanted to escape the loneliness of his large castle and therefore had this villa built. He lived here for six more years until his death in 1876.
