As a natural underground spring overflows upstream of the Tufa field it seeps out of the ground where moss begins to grow.
As the moss extracts carbon dioxide from the flowing water which is rich in calcium carbonate, a biochemical reaction petrifies the moss.
The moss continues to grow to evade the grip of the petrification process and so the steps, mounds and contours of the Tufière are formed and continue to grow.
