The Via Cava of Laterini

Among the Vie Cava of Sorano, it is perhaps the least characteristic and representative of the concept of Via Cava (road dug into the tuff) that we are used to seeing in our territory, but from a naturalistic point of view it is certainly the most evocative.

The road runs alongside the Castelsereno stream and enters the woods through a path that at times wedges itself between tuff walls dug and leveled by man.
The particular climatic and geological conditions of these roads have given rise to particular woodland conditions.
In fact, moving from the valley floor towards the upper part of the plateaus, different tree species are encountered, willows and poplars in the lower, more humid and shady part, Turkey oaks and oaks in the higher part.
The particular climate of this area upstream from the town of Sorano is demonstrated by the presence of some beech trees.
The use of these wooded areas continued until the 60s/70s as the wood was transported out of the forest through the hollow roads on the backs of mules that in this area for a long time were also used to transport grapes from the vineyards to the cellars of Sorano.
Located at the center of the ancient road system of Sorano, the path allows you to create a series of itineraries of varying length and difficulty together with the other hollow roads of San Rocco and San Carlo.
