Legend has it that the pilgrimage originated in the discovery of a picture of Mary in a spring. The shepherd who found it could not believe it as it withdrew from its grip and sank lower. The image was finally salvaged from the water by the pastor of Roding, who had called for a procession to the spring the following day and had it set up there in a shrine.

As predecessor of today's church stood since 1668 a chapel on the site of a miracle-working well known source. Since the pilgrimage there was very popular, the chapel was expanded 16 years later. The chapel was replaced in 1730 by the present church building. Until the 19th century, a Leonhardiritt was held annually at the pilgrimage church.

Patroness of the church is Our Lady and furthermore St. Mary Magdalene. The destination of pilgrims is the pilgrimage church with the miraculous image of Our Lady all year round. On so-called Women's Day - the Marian festivals, especially the Visitation, Assumption and the Nativity, and the Day of Patronalty, Mary Magdalene (July 22) - and the following Sundays, the pilgrimage is particularly popular.

The pilgrimage church was built in 1730 and visited especially on the women's days.
