Probably built around the year 1300, the ruins of the Freienfels castle are now particularly well-known for the annual medieval market with jousting games. The spectacle is one of the oldest and largest events of its kind in Germany and attracts far more visitors than the small town of Freienfels has inhabitants. The ruin is comparatively well preserved and can be visited. Especially from the tower there is a beautiful view of the Weiltal and the surrounding hills. The specially founded Friends of the Castle of Freienfels takes care of the preservation of the castle ruins.
