The legend of the Eule Cross

If you follow a path from the Löstertal up to the moor, you will discover under the largest oak a wooden cross, the so-called Eulenkreuz. An exhausted farmer from Mettnich marched in a deep winter through the high forest with a wool-filled bag on his back, which he wanted to bring to the Wadern spinning mill. The man collapsed from exhaustion from the load, the cold and his hunger in the snow. He fell asleep, was snowed down and as the snow cleared away in the spring then all the owls flew out of the forest around the corpse. When this was found through the owls, the said cross was erected at this point.

Also on the site of the Eulenkreuz was the Hexentanzplatz, which was lined on Walpurgisnacht full of witches, there celebrated their festivals and could cause harm to the people. But the next morning they disappeared again. One morning a farmer went to his meadow to mow food for the animals. There was a complete silence around him and when he started with the scythe for the first blow, the whole meadow was full of horses' heads. For fear of this magic, he went home. When he returned at noon, the heads were gone and everything was as before.
