The church was built in the 13th century. The Romanesque arched doorways still bear witness to this today. The apse-shaped eastern end of the building was lost in the Thirty Years' War. The church was renovated and remodeled in 1736 and 1883. It was only slightly damaged in World War II. In 1945, the mayor at the time gave permission for the church to be plundered. The fieldstone construction and the 1.10 to 2.30 m thick church walls limited the destructive rage. The church was in ruins for many decades. Reconstruction only began in 2001. Today the church is used for services and cultural events. The tower is easy to walk up and offers a view over Wesendahl and as far as Berlin. In good weather, the television tower can be seen.
