Although titles of nobility were only inherited by male and first-born children, they could also be transmitted from the mother's side.
This palace belonged to the Marquisate of Puerto, a title granted for the first time to Joaquín Ignacio Barrenechea y Erguiñigo, in 1741, as a reward for services provided to the king. The Martínez de Pisón family was the owner of this palace until, in 1861, the founder of what is now Bodegas Faustino bought the palace and its vineyards.
