Durgerdam Chapel was originally a Roman Catholic church; the first mention dates back to 1499. The chapel is a Roman word meaning small house of prayer. In 1572, the Alteration outlawed Roman Catholic worship. In 1623 services were held again, but then reformed. When the church became too small, another church was built in 1642, the chapel continued to serve as a parish hall and the school was given more space.

After the great fire in Durgerdam in 1687, in which almost all the houses on the dyke went up in flames and the chapel with the city archives stored here was also damaged, the chapel was rebuilt from the ground floor up. This work began on August 25, 1687. To commemorate this event, a hard stone plaque with the year "1687" was made.

In 1866, after the construction of a larger school, the chapel became the postmaster's house and a police station with a real prison. From 1917 to 1925 it was a municipal fish auction, workshop and residence, and today it is a residence.
And during the war, in 1941, there was also a reconstruction commissioned by the German occupiers and carried out by the Public Works Department. The builder then used the chapel as a residence.
