    Matthias Klotz (1653-1743) can be considered the founder of violin making in Mittenwald. Klotz probably learned his craft from an instrument maker in Füssen before he worked as a journeyman for Pietro Railich in Padua from 1672 to 1678. Nothing is known about the years that followed until his return to Mittenwald in the 1680s.
