    Beautiful Catholic Church

      October 5, 2023

The chapel used by the inhabitants of the district having become too small given the increase in the population, the commune of NeuillyNote 1 bought land from the Armaillé familyNote 2 who had built a “manor” there in the 18th century1. The church is located between rue Saint-Ferdinand and rue Armaillé, slightly set back from avenue des Ternes2.

The plan of the new church was entrusted to the Protestant architect, Paul-Eugène Lequeux (1806-1873), author of the expansion plans from 1839 of the Sainte-Marie des Batignolles church and the old town hall of Batignolles in 1847-1849, now demolished.

The church, built between 1842 and 1847, is named "Saint-Ferdinand" in memory of the first name of royal prince Ferdinand-Philippe d'Orléans, eldest son of King Louis-Philippe, who died accidentally on July 13, 1842, near the Porte Maillot, nearbyNote 3 and whose patron saint was Saint Ferdinand III of Castile (1199-1252) who was king of Castile from 1217 to 1230, and king of Castile and León from 1230 to 1252.

The church was blessed on March 25, 1847 by Mgr Denys Affre, Archbishop of Paris. But it quickly turns out to be too small3. From 1849, the manor of the d'Armaillé family was destroyed, on its site streets were drawn, then on October 15, 1856 the municipality of Neuilly, to enlarge the church, bought from the d'Armaillé family, a large plot of land located in Ternes “having a surface capacity of 2,249 m2, for a main price of 53,000 F.”4. The church - enlarged - was then blessed again and inaugurated in 1878 by Cardinal Joseph Hippolyte Guibert, Archbishop of Paris.
