Founded in the 4th century as one of the last fortresses of the Roman 'Saxon coast', Pevensey Castle was also the landing site of William the Conqueror's army in 1066. It was later returned to use as an emergency stronghold in the Second World War - you can still see machine gun posts camouflaged in the castle walls.

Built by the Romans around 290 AD, Pevensey Castle was probably part of a defensive system to protect the coast from Saxon pirates. It remained in Roman control until 1066 when it was occupied by the Normans who built a stone keep and fortification within the walls. The Normans occupied the castle until the 16th century when it was abandoned and fell into ruin.

During World War II, it was used to house units from the Home Guard and machine-gun posts were built into the walls. They can still be seen today.

The Castle is now managed by English Heritage. Entrance is £7.50 per adult. Opening times vary so check here before you visit: english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/pevensey-castle/prices-and-opening-times
