The now free-standing Eulenturm, built around 1387, was originally integrated into the city wall ring around the old town of Melsungen. As part of the city fortifications, the strategically important building was located between the "Rotenburger Tor" and the "Fritzlarer Tor". Only the owl tower has been preserved in its original height. From its top one could see the surroundings well, from here the southern area outside the old town up to the Fulda and the Nürnberger Landstraße was monitored. From 1575 to 1690 the tower was temporarily used as a prison. Later the city servant lived in an apartment in the upper half of the tower.
