Usually churches are located in the middle of a village, but here it is different. All around you see only meadows, forest and a single farm. The church is therefore a lot older than the nearby village of Havelte. Originally this was a clearing in a forest where pagan rituals were performed. Later a chapel was built here, which over the centuries was expanded into the current church.
