453 dead rest on the grave site from the years 1959/60. Most of them perished during or shortly after World War II: Soviet prisoners of war, Gestapo and concentration camp prisoners, Wehrmacht and Waffen SS soldiers, forced labourers, displaced persons and German civilians, as well as seven children of forced laborers. 13 people who died in World War I are also buried here. The dead were buried by the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e. V reburied in the Arnsburg monastery ruins.

The ruins of the Arnsburg Cistercian monastery are an important architectural monument. The actual monastery buildings form the center of the complex. The extensive construction of the Arnsburg church was probably started in 1197. In the years 1959-1960, a unique cemetery for war victims was laid out in the cloister of the monastery, encouraging reflection.
