The ruins of Virneburg are the ruins of a hilltop castle on a 430 m above sea level surrounded by the Nitzbach. NHN high slate crest above the municipality of the same name. From here you have a great all-round view. Unfortunately, the access road can be described as S3 and is very slippery when it's dry. Less advanced bikers should rather push their bikes here. But the 50 m is worth it!

The castle was probably built in the second half of the 12th century as a fiefdom. The castle was first mentioned in a document from 1192, in which the brothers Gottfried and Friedrich von Virneburg gave their castle "Vernenburgh" along with the county and all its accessories as a fief to the Archbishop of Trier, Johann I. The original of this document has not been preserved; the copy from the 16th century is either a faulty transmission or a forgery due to the formulations it contains, which were not common around 1200.

The lords of Virneburg, later raised to the rank of counts, are first mentioned in 1042 in a document by Archbishop Poppo of Trier as "Bernhardus de Virneburch". At that time, feudal sovereignty had passed to the Counts of Sayn, but Johann von Sayn ceded it back to the Counts Palatine in 1358, with the exception of the castle, which was still mentioned in 1506 as a fiefdom of the Counts of Sayn, but the Counts of Virneburg did not recognize their feudal sovereignty more on.

In 1339, Count Ruprecht von Virneburg enfeoffed the Elector of Trier, Balduin, with part of the castle in return for the waiver of a debt.

In 1414 the Counts of Virneburg had to hand over the rest of the castle to Archbishop Werner von Falkenstein, who had always been a thorn in his side. But just a few years later, the Virneburg family succeeded in releasing their castle from the Trier pledge. With the death of Count Kunos von Virneburg in 1545, the Virneburg family died out.
