Rudolf Bahro was a German philosopher, politician and social ecologist. He was one of the most prominent dissidents in the GDR and became known for his criticism of real socialism in the book The Alternative. In 1979 he left the GDR, lived in West Germany until 1989 and returned to Berlin in 1990. He died in Berlin in 1997.
