The Penshaw Monument stands at the south-western edge of Penshaw Hill. It was built in 1844–1845 as a monument to John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham. It was designed in the style of an ancient Greek temple and built using the local gritstone.

It's been owned and managed by the National Trust since 1939.
