The statue is depicting a Birkebeiner skier bringing the late king's one-year-old son Håkon Håkonsson, heir to the Norwegian throne, to safety from the Bagler faction during the Norwegian civil war era. Two of the best skiers among the Birkebeiners, Torstein Skjevla og Skjervald Skrukka, managed to get the heir to safety across the snowy and stormy mountains. Håkon Håkonsson later became king and eventually put an end to the civil war.
