After more than 20 miles along the edge of the Hat Creek Rim, the PCT trail finally drops down into the valley, at a very scenic break in the rim. The rim continues to the north, but here it has a natural ramp down along a hardened fairly young lava flow, its black rocks still exposed without vegetation or erosion cover.
