There is a path around the lower reservoir that is used by pedestrians, cyclists, hikers and Nordic walkers alike. It can get tight, especially on weekends.

Nice lake view with restaurant. Marvel at the technology at the dam.

A nice place to stop for a short break. Unfortunately, the roads around the lake are well developed, but not entirely harmless because of the heavy traffic.
The reservoir was on my 120km lap and only there I was overtaken by locals several times in a row.

Cappuccino was good, service relatively sluggish. With the tip that suddenly changed. Too bad you don't pay right away.

              Great view!

The Happurger See (366 m above NHN) is a reservoir, embedded in the Hersbrucker Alb, surrounded by the Houbirg (618 m), the Deckersberg (586 m) and Reicheneck.

Before the Happurger See was built in 1955, there was an only partially completed satellite camp of the Flossenbürg concentration camp in the south-eastern area of today's lake. This was built in the fall of 1944 as an extension of the existing camp in Hersbruck on the outskirts of Förrenbach and covered an area of 3.2 hectares. The prisoners were mainly used to construct the Dogger tunnels in the Houbirg mountain range.[1]

The lake is fed by the Happurger Bach and its left tributary, the Kainsbach. The Happurg[2] pumped-storage power plant, which went into operation in 1958 and was operated by the Franconian Überlandwerk (which was later taken over by E.ON and now belongs to Uniper), used the lake as a lower reservoir. The associated upper reservoir is located on the Deckersberg. The average size of the lake is about 55 hectares. The lake takes its name from the neighboring village of Happurg. It was built by the Nuremberg architect and winner of the Culture Prize of the City of Nuremberg, Franz Reichel.

The power plant has been out of operation since January 2011 due to water ingress in the upper reservoir of the pumped storage power plant. The renovation work was postponed further and further and completion was initially planned for 2016.[3] As early as 2013, the recommissioning was postponed to 2017 after the renovation report[4] was available.[5]

The refurbishment work was postponed further and further and a restart is questionable, since part of the power plant equipment has already been removed as spare parts for other facilities.[6]

Nevertheless, there is still the prospect of reopening.

Idyllic lake and energy supply for the region with a hideous past.
