According to a legend, Saint Ulrich is said to have consecrated a church in Wertach on a trip to the Allgäu. The first written mention of the parish is from June 11, 1331, when Heinrich von Rötenberg granted the patronage and church title of Wertach to the Cistercian monastery of Stams in Tyrol. In 1332, the parish church was incorporated into the monastery by Bishop Ulrich of Augsburg with the consent of his cathedral chapter, with all rights and usability. This legal process was confirmed by Pope Benedict XII in 1338.
