The castle of Lecce, also known as the Castle of Charles V, is a fortress located in the historic center of the city built in the 12th century as the residence of the counts of Lecce. In the 16th century, the emperor Charles V ordered a restructuring of the castle to adapt it to the new defensive and symbolic needs. The castle thus assumed its current form, with four corner bastions and a wall that incorporated the previous medieval structure.

In 1539, Emperor Charles V ordered the demolition of the old medieval main bulwark and the construction of a new, modern fortress using military architecture techniques. The design and construction works were assigned to Gian Giacomo dell'Acaja, the general engineer of the Kingdom of Naples. The outermost part of the fortress was realized between 1539 and 1549.

The fortress should not only have a defensive function; e.g. For example, one of the halls was used as a theater in the 18th century.

From 1870 to 1979 the fortress was barracks and a military district. On April 30, 1983, the military administration handed the fortress over to the city of Lecce, which today uses it as the seat of the Assessorato alla Cultura (English: Cultural Department) and as a center for cultural events. The first floor of the fortress in the north-west and south-east parts is used for holding events, supporting cultural initiatives and holding exhibitions.
