Hiking Highlight

The town of Skarsvåg, which has around 60 inhabitants, is located on the Norwegian island of Magerøya in the province of Troms og Finnmark. A hiking trail leads from here to Kirkeporten, a striking rock formation in the form of a rock portal. The view of the spectacular North Cape falls through the portal in a north-westerly direction. The black slate cliffs rise almost 300 meters steeply out of the wave-swept Arctic Ocean. Only 2,100 kilometers and
a few archipelagos lie between the North Cape on the north of the island of Magerøya and the North Pole. For two and a half months the sun does not set below the horizon here in summer. The rock plateau is often incorrectly referred to as the northernmost point of Europe. In fact, the tip of the Nordkinn Peninsula is a little further north than the famous viewpoint and is said to be the northernmost point of mainland Europe. The landmark of the North Cape is the sculpture in the form of a globe in the front area of the rocky plateau. Not far from the steep cliffs, the large globe symbolically marks the end of mainland Europe.
