Lichtenfels is the district town of the Lichtenfels district in the Bavarian administrative district of Upper Franconia and a medium-sized center. It belongs to the Nuremberg metropolitan region. The town, located on the upper reaches of the Main, is known as the German basket town due to its long tradition of basket-making. According to archaeological excavations, Lichtenfels already existed in the early Middle Ages, i.e. since the 7th/8th century. It was first mentioned in documents in 1142. The town charter granted by Otto VIII, Duke of Merania, has been in effect since 1231.
