Castro Urdiales is one of the most populated municipalities in Cantabria. It has prospered over the centuries as a commercial and military port. Military vessels have set sail from this port to conquer Seville in Muslim times and ships of the invincible armada also set sail from here. For centuries it was a center of trade with Atlantic Europe and after the conquest of America its ships and port were in charge only of colonial goods.
Among its most important monuments, the fortified complex formed by the church of Santa María de la Asunción and the castle of Santa Ana stand out. Both original from the 12th and 13th centuries but which were not completed until the 15th century.
