In Norway it's more nature that seems dominant and outstanding. In this respect, it is surprising when a rather imposing building suddenly comes into view between Gravdal and Ballstad: Buksnes Church. Washed red with white struts, it contrasts sharply with the green of the pines and the blue (or gray) of the sky. A certain resemblance to the stave churches of the country is not difficult to recognize. This is intentional, as the building is a late example of the Norwegian kite style, which mainly imitated the gable kites used to ward off demons and the pagoda-shaped structure of the stave churches.
Buksnes Church was consecrated on November 22, 1905. Once it still had cross braces, which should serve the steadfastness in storms roaring across the North Atlantic. However, when the building was renovated in the 1960s, the wood was removed and integrated into the walls. Elsewhere in Lofoten, the churches still have such brackets on the outside wall.
