The site on the edge of the town of Abteroda commemorates the prisoners and forced laborers who had to work for the BMW aircraft engine factory in the Anton subcamp of the Buchenwald concentration camp. Right next to it is the entrance to the underground production rooms. Today the catacombs are a bat habitat. Up to 230 forced laborers were housed in two warehouses, surrounded by a fence and watchtowers. The first prisoners were brought here in August 1944, and the camp was dissolved in April 1945.
