At the Markt Dachau on the busy trade route between Munich and Augsburg, a pavement toll was levied at least since the 16th century. In 1790, the customs officer Josef Riedl requested that a shelter be set up because he was "constantly exposed to the inclemency of the weather while fulfilling his duties". However, the customs house was not built until 1820 and was in use until the end of customs duty in 1929. Today the beautifully preserved little house is the seat of the Dachau Tourist Information Office.
