The church was built in 1217, but today only a few stretches of wall of this Romanesque building are visible at the foot of the bell tower.

In the second half of the 17th century, complete reconstruction in the Baroque style was planned: a very burdensome undertaking that probably resulted in the façade not being completed.

The reconstruction of the bell tower (1671) also caused problems as the old foundations did not support the new 29 meter high tower: the slope of the same is clearly visible.

The interior of the church is frescoed by painters of the Piedmontese and Lombard schools, including Salvatore Bianchi (for the dome) and Luca Rossetti (for the apse).
