The Cuma area was already inhabited starting from the early Iron Age, or even the last phase of the Bronze Age, by indigenous peoples, as evidenced by some necropolises, in whose tombs grave goods dating back to that period were found. The foundation of Cuma, according to tradition, took place around 730 BC, thanks to some Greek colonists, Megasthenes and Ippocles, from Chalcis, who destroyed the small village and founded the new city on a promontory characterized by steep and steep walls, optimal to prevent enemy raids.
