In the bay of Paimpol, Beauport Abbey is a remarkable monastic complex, a major witness to religious architecture in Brittany. It is also an exemplary place of conservation, where the interests of the monument combine with those of an exceptional natural site. At the dawn of the 13th century, Count Alain de Goรซlo founded the Beauport Abbey and installed canons of the Premonstratensian order there. For 500 years, the religious community shaped the place and implemented important developments, while respecting their monastic rules and the needs of their community life. Closed during the French Revolution, then sold as national property, the abbey buildings were in turn transformed into a stable, town hall, bourgeois apartments, school and cider house.

This abbey was founded in the 13th century by the Premonstratensians and was an important spiritual and economic center of the diocese of St-Brieuc. Of the 13th-century church, only the facade, the roofless nave, the northern aisle and the left cross arm are still standing. The long chapter house with a polygonal apse is a fine example of Anglo-Norman Gothic.

The tour leads along the cloister; the large refectory (with a beautiful entrance), which overlooks the sea; the lower courtyard; the ducal building (guest house for pilgrims); the pantry under the refectory; and the chaplain's quarters, where the monks collected the salt duty and tax on the pumping station. The Conservatoire de Littoral, the government agency responsible for the protection of the coast and lake shores, has drawn up a program to ensure the preservation and restoration of the abbey complex, which is occupied today.

This is the starting point of one of the many pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela.

It's a truly beautiful setting on the coast where nature has reclaimed half of the historic abbey, and the restored half houses a museum.
