Memorial in honor of the 11,347 British and South African soldiers who died during the First World War and who were not buried. The memorial covers the combat zones from the Caëstre-Dranoutre-Warneton line in the north, to Haverskerque-Estaires-Fournes to the south, including the towns of Hazebrouck, Merville, Bailleul and Armentières, the forest of Nieppe, and the woods of Ploegsteert.
The memorial was inaugurated on June 7, 1931 in the presence of the future King Leopold III. This building is, by its size, the third most imposing memorial in Belgium.
The monument is in the form of a circular colonnaded temple, and the building is guarded by two stone lions; one symbolizing Belgium and the other the British Empire.
