The fortress is part of the Unesco World Heritage Dutch Waterlines:
These were used to defend the western Netherlands. In the event of a threat, the locks could be opened to flood the land.
The flooded area served an important purpose: the knee-high water was too shallow for enemy boats and too high for vehicles, foot soldiers and horsemen. The land along the waterline was impassable! To this day, the water is considered an important ally of the Netherlands
