The most important medieval architectural monument in the city of Schleswig is the almost 900 year old St. Petri Cathedral. As soon as you enter the imposing interior of the church, the history of the church flows through you.
From the corner of your eye you can see a lot of sights from the Romanesque and Gothic construction period. A few influences from the Renaissance and the Baroque can also be seen.
One of the oldest sacred furnishings and earliest examples of its kind north of the Alps is the Three Kings altar with its life-size, fully plastic figures from the year 1300.
Historians assume that the Sankt Petri Dom was built around 1105, possibly on the foundations of a previous building.
In the year 1300, a 100 year long, extensive further development of the Sankt Petri Dom began. During this construction phase, the church attendance, the so-called "Schwahl", arose in which the Schwahlmarkt, a Christmas market, known far beyond Schleswig's city limits, takes place today.

The construction of the cathedral took centuries. He probably started around 1100 and was first mentioned in 1134. At the end of the 13th century it was completed as a gothic hall church. The main tower was built only from 1888-1894.
