Like the neighboring Hainer See to the east, the Kahnsdorfer See emerged from the lignite opencast mine "Witznitz II". It is part of the Leipziger Neuseenland post-mining landscape and is located north of Borna and south of Leipzig in the Neukieritzsch municipality. It should be completely flooded by 2018 by introducing water from the United Schleenhain opencast mine. The lake and the adjacent shore areas are owned by Blauwasser GmbH & Co. KG. In contrast to the Hainer See, the Kahnsdorfer See with its shore area as a priority area for nature and landscape is largely left to its own devices.

The water here is incredibly clear. The best access is north of Kahnsdorf, just after/before the Kahnsdorf Stud.
