The old zijl (lock leaving the sea) used to be in Nieuweschans. Due to reclamation, the boundary between land and water moved further, the Council of State decided in 1707 to have a new Zijl built: Nieuwe Statenzijl.

The northeasternmost point of the Netherlands. From there you have a view of the Dollart up to Emden. Germany is on the right, the Netherlands is on the left, behind one is the Westerwolder Aa as Grenzfluss (or it is the smaller moat next to it). This lock or dike was created in the course of the delta project. From the lock you can get to a viewpoint, a raised house behind the reeds and in the direction of Watt.
