Father David Maria Turoldo, born Giuseppe, was born in Coderno, in the lower Friuli region.

He entered the Order of the Servants of Mary at a very young age and was ordained a priest in 1940.

Assigned to the convent of San Carlo al Corso in Milan, he actively participated in the Resistance, was a preacher in the Cathedral and gave impetus to many charitable and cultural initiatives.

His literary production, in poetry and prose, confirmed him as a great poet and man of letters.

After the liberation of Milan he reorganized the Christian community of San Carlo.

His homilies held for ten years from 1943 to 1953 in the Milan Cathedral became famous.

His works are mainly poetry, theatre, essays and biblical-theological reflection.

He has also created works of dramaturgy and contemporary sacred representations.

He also wrote the screenplay for a film about his Friuli, "The Last", made in 1962 directed by Vito Pandolfi.

He suffered the incomprehension of the ecclesiastical authorities in silence and obedience.
In 1954, also for the support he had given to Don Zeno Saltini's work, Nomadelfia, he was removed from Italy by order of the Holy Office.

He then traveled a long itinerary in Austria, Bavaria, England, the United States and Canada, which made him known and appreciated by a vast world, even outside his Order.

Upon returning to Italy he went to Florence, where he collaborated with the mayor Giorgio La Pira, for whom the cause of beatification is underway.

After leaving Florence after a few years, he went to Udine and then began looking for a place where he could gather his strength and settle.

He found it in Fontanella di Sotto il Monte, the town in the province of Bergamo that was the birthplace of Saint John XXIII, in the ancient abbey of Sant'Egidio.

He had it restored with love and worship of beauty and in 1964 he created the "House of Emmaus" spirituality center, a place of ecumenical appeal and welcome for individuals and groups.
