The 48-metre-high tower was built in 1952 to a design by J. Zietsma and was located south of the village on the site of the former Haarlems Kinderhuis. It was originally planned as a round tower but eventually took on an octagonal shape. The water tower was clad in bricks on the outside with a core of concrete and steel.

At the top there was originally a café-restaurant where one could enjoy a beautiful view of the surroundings for many years until it was closed in the 1990s.
