The brick fortress was built from 1878 to 1883 to defend the old Antwerp – Mechelen road. Later, in 1891-1900, it was converted into an armored fortress and reinforced with concrete.

During the First World War, the fortress of Walem could withstand the German army for five days. As a result, it was heavily damaged. The fortress is so dilapidated that it is no longer accessible. The domain is now recognized as a nature reserve. Many bats have found their home in the fort. The most common species are the water bat, the fringed bat, the fire bat and the bearded bat. The domain is a European Special Protection Area.
