The Großer Lochstein is probably one of the most impressive rock formations in the Veldensteiner Forest area. The imposing rock tower is crossed at the base by a passage cave about ten meters long. It has been designated by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment as an important geotope (geotope number: 472R086) and as a natural monument. Bavaria's most beautiful geotope number 49: lfu.bayern.de/geologie/bayerns_schoenste_geotope/49/index.htm.

The Großer Lochstein in the Veldensteiner Forst is a striking rock tower made of Franconian dolomite, which was formed by weathering under tropical climatic conditions more than 100 million years ago. This document of a Lower Cretaceous karst landscape has been preserved by younger sand deposits. Only the removal of these layers in the recent geological past brought it back to light. (net find)
