Palazzo Stampa Cittadini is a three-storey building that conceals beautiful frescoes inside. Palazzo Cittadini Stampa is a majestic architectural and historical complex of great importance, located at the gates of the city of Abbiategrasso right on the junction between the Naviglio Grande and the Naviglio di Bereguardo. The building is structured on three floors, has a regular and large plan, is 30 meters long, has a height of about 10 meters and a depth of about 12 meters.
Palazzo Cittadini Stampa does not have a precise date of construction, but it is assumed that it was built in its first configuration between the end of the fourteenth century and the beginning of the fifteenth century. The oldest document in which the building is mentioned is the will dating back to 1697 of the priest Giuseppe Cittadini, who is considered to be the probable author of the architectural work.
The restoration work completed in 2014 brought to light the original core of the building, a square tower that over the years was flanked and incorporated by other building works, until it disappeared in the current structure.
The building was built by the will of the wealthy Milanese family of Cittadini, who owned numerous lands in the Abbiategrasso area. Their fortune went into a long decline and at first they decided to sell only a part of the complex, but with the death of Giovanni Cittadini they lost complete ownership.
In 1835 Giuliano Baronio, husband of a descendant of the Visconti family, decided to buy Palazzo Stampa Cittadini and its garden. The palace was thus inherited by her daughter and her husband, the famous patriot Gaspare Stampa, who made it his home until his death in 1874.
Since then Palazzo Stampa Cittadini became public property passing to the E.C.A. (Municipal Assistance Body of Milan) and subsequently to the Administration of the Municipality of Abbiategrasso.
In the following years the building fell into a poor state of conservation, due to abandonment and total neglect, but in 1982 the roof covering was renovated to prevent the collapse of the building and to protect the internal walls from decay.
In 2008 the first recovery works began which led to the complete renovation of the Palazzo Stampa Cittadini at the end of 2014.
Palazzo Cittadini Stampa is the only publicly owned villa on the Navigli and therefore open to the public for visits. During the June Bikenight between Milan and Arona it also serves as a refreshment point. It is located in this small square in Castelletto where the inlet of the Naviglio is and where the Naviglio di Bereguardo is born. In the square you will also find the landing stage, a delicatessen and a tavern.
