In the Diemerscheg - near Muiden on the site of the old A1 motorway - a pilot project with grazing by water buffalo was started in spring 2021. The pilot project has a duration of 5 years.
The wet swamp area between the Maxisweg and today's A1 forms the connection between the Naardermeer and the Waterland in the north of Amsterdam. With this new connection to nature, the province of North Holland wants to increase the living space for animals. Otters and grass snakes in particular are expected to benefit from this connection through the water.
The animals feed on vegetation and can easily swim through the water. Water buffalo move between the islands, creating new paths and pools in the swampy areas along the way. In this way, they keep the wet connection zone open to other animals. So the water buffalo are not only maintaining the area, they are the bioengineers who will shape the area. Meanwhile, water buffalo have already given birth to at least two calves.
