    Pupils
In the Netherlands around 1870 there was a lack of volunteers and executives in the army. In the Dutch East Indies, favorable results were achieved with the education of young people aged 7 to 10 years. These children were called pupils, a name that originated with the recruitment in the Napoleonic era. Following Belgium, France and Prussia, it was decided to set up a so-called Pupil School for boys aged 12 to 18 years.

    Pupil school Nieuwersluis
By Royal Decree of January 27, 1877, the Pupil School was established in Nieuwersluis, which was under the patronage of King Willem III. The school was headed by an infantry captain, who was the principal of the school. The school was under the immediate orders of the Inspector of Infantry.

    For whom?
Children of military personnel between the ages of twelve and fourteen could be admitted to the Pupil School in Nieuwersluis. However, children of civilians were also welcome against payment of money. The maximum capacity was initially set at 50 students. This was soon expanded to 100 pupils and in 1881 to 250 pupils. The pay of the pupils amounted to f 0.30 per day.
Herman Stieljes, cousin of Gerard Lückens, was one of the pupils of this school.

    Teaching
The pupils were taught reading, writing, Dutch language, arithmetic, history, geography and religion of their choice. In addition, education was given in military regulations, drills, gymnastics, skating, swimming, exercise with artillery and fire hose and, if possible, in some crafts that were used in the army.
