At the end of the 19th century, the course of the river was straightened and tamed down to the Elbe with dams and locks. One of them is the Dolany lock (Zdymadlo Dolany). The facility is located near the small village of Dolany nad Vltavou (Dolan on the Vltava) just a few kilometers north (=downriver) of Prague and is one of 13 dams and locks on the more than 60-kilometer stretch of the Prague river Old town to the Elbe near Mělník. A beautiful hiking trail leads past it on both sides of the river.
