Taking the boat from Grovelsjon to Sylen does avoid a simple there and back if you plan to hike up Salsfjellet. There are two available boat trip options. A regular ferry from the little pier has a scheduled timetable (not very frequent) or the local cafe runs a boat taxi service. The regular ferry is slow and relaxed the boat taxi is fast and thrilling. During the boat trip you pass from Sweden into Norway (no border controls) and the wreck of a WW2 German bomber that crashed into the lake.

We shortened our tour by taking the taxi boat part way. You should actually book this by phone in advance, but we were kindly taken along without booking. With the taxi boat you cross the lake very, very quickly. We occasionally overtook the ferry, which runs slower but at fixed times. During the ride you can take a quick look at the plane that crashed during World War II.

Excellent walk! First take the boat across the lake to Sylen and then walk back to Grovelsjon. Is a great walk of 3 hours (without breaks). At Sylen a steep climb but not difficult. Well marked and passable route. Certainly does not deserve the stamp 'heavy walk'. In Sweden they call the walk 'good to do'. The boat goes there and back 3 times a day (August 24).
